Our Mission
Orlando Literary Magazine is the University of Iowa’s first undergraduate literary magazine that focuses on amplifying LGBTQIA+ stories. We accept anything with a queer factor – whether that be the author, the characters, or an artistic theme – and are looking for all different genres, identities, and perspectives. Our primary goal is to provide a space where one can be truly authentic and not worry about any judgment or hatred.
We Publish
Undergraduate work made by creators who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as work that centers the LGBTQ+ community, whether that be a main character, storyline, subject of an art piece, or anything else that is just gay in some way.
We accept:
- Fiction
- Non-Fiction
- Poetry
- Stageplays & Screenplays
- Photography
- Any Art Form

Why "Orlando"?
Our name comes from Orlando, the 1928 novel by Virginia Woolf. It is a groundbreaking queer work that follows themes of gender fluidity and sexuality. The novel itself was inspired by Woolf's relationship with Vita Sackville-West, and has been called "the longest and most charming love letter in literature" by Sackville-West's son, Nigel Nicolson.
